Steve Rondo & The Rudys + Jack Shea (Full Band) w/ James Gaudreau

JULY 23 @ 7PM | DOORS 6PM | UPSTAIRS

A night of great local indie rock & singer-songwriters.

Steve Rondo is a songwriter for his indie-rock band from Boston, MA. They released their debut Fate Loves the Fearless, featuring Matches (described as “stadium-ready Americana” by 92.5 FM The River and Afternoon Rebellion (featured on Spotify’s editorial playlist Fresh Finds Indie). You can expect an exciting big-rock-sound from the group’s live performances with everything from whaling guitar solos to head rocking half-times. Their songs attempt to tackle coming-of-age stories channeled through rock anthems that anyone in their 20s can relate to.

The group formed in 2017 just after graduating college when they thrusted themselves out into the real world, playing four nights a week at every bar and club nestled between the neighborhoods of Boston all the way down to the far reaches of outer Cape Cod. Since then, Steve Rondo has built up a strong fanbase throughout the Northeast and have completed two regional tours. Their debut EP launched the group into some exciting opportunities including; a supporting slot opening for Irish star, Dermot Kennedy, and securing festival slots at Levitate Music Festival 2023 and Riverfest presented by 92.5 The River.

In 2024 the group recorded their debut LP that is set to release in May 2025.

Kind Hearted Strangers w/ The Rollin' Rust & Coyote Smoke

JULY 26 @ 6:30PM | DOORS 5:30PM | UPSTAIRS

Scorching rock & Americana from a band that is absolutely electrifying live.

Kind Hearted Strangers is an evolving cast of musicians led by singer/songwriter Marc Townes. Tracing its origins to the foothills of Colorado, 2025 finds the band creating and touring out of Nashville, TN. As the name implies, the project acts as the primary vessel for Townes’ artistic endeavors, as he has been joined by a variety of musicians for each album cycle. With a foundation built on well crafted songs, KHS has evolved into a dynamic live band capable of bridging the gap between all out rock n’ roll and harmony-driven acoustic roots.

The band’s latest LP entitled “Now.here” features a collaboration with visual artist/painter Dylan Lynch. This immersive project found the group working in a shared Richmond, VA warehouse space for 5 days. With no prepared material, the artists intentionally put pressure on themselves to create and deliver a Live Concert & Art Exhibition at the end of the week. The resulting album contains brand new material that was recorded live with the same raw energy and passion KHS has been delivering across the country during their busiest era of touring to date.

The Rollin’ Rust is a folk rock group based out of the foothills of Central New York. Led by singer-songwriter James VanDeuson, The Rollin’ Rust celebrates the distinguished writing style of a vagabond folk artist, incorporating elements of blues, bluegrass, roots, folk and country. Rollin’ Rust tunes have a distinct originality to them; they’ll be dropping you off somewhere between your favorite Willie Nelson song and the closet where your mother’s rock-n-roll collection still lives… the one she thought she got rid of years ago. James is joined by his bandmates Jim Hearn (lead guitarist) Kyle Dennis, (drums/vocals), and Nash Robb, (upright/elec. bass and vocals)

The Rollin Rust formed in 2021 and has since made its musical mark with efficiency, performing at several notable music festivals including, Borderland Music Festival, the Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival of Music and Dance, Great Blue Heron Music Festival, Stony Fork Music Festival, Seedstock Music Festival, Brew York, Sterling Stage, Fall Down Music Festival, and many others. The group has traveled to 25+ states, sharing lineups with CAAMP, Watchhouse (previously Mandolin Orange), The Black Crowes, Sam Bush, The Wood Brothers, Dark Star Orchestra, Ryan Montbleau, Marcus King, Cabinet, Fireside Collective, Houndmouth, Sierra Hull and more. The Rollin’ Rust has directly supported Grammy winner Brandy Clark, Donna The Buffalo, Ryan Montbleau Band, Driftwood, Pressing Strings, Argonaut & Wasp, and Hunter Root.

In 2024, The Rollin’ Rust competed against 70+ bands for a main stage slot at the prestigious Borderland Music Festival, winning the “Battle Of The Borderland,” competition.

The Rollin’ Rust’s debut album, “Road Rats,” was nominated for Best Americana Album at the SAMMY Awards in Syracuse, NY.

The Rollin’ Rust tells the noble tale of a rambling group of young dreamers, unafraid to live out of vans, buses, and hotel rooms. Their polished performance, unmistakable comradery, and colorful lyricism tends to leave its mark on an audience… wherever they happen to end up for the night.

Coyote Smoke is a dynamic six-piece band hailing from New Hampshire, seamlessly blending the rich influences of blues rock, indie, Americana, and outlaw country tunes to forge a distinct and powerful sound.

Inspired by artists such as Chris Stapleton, Sierra Ferrell, Nathaniel Rateliff, Shakey Graves, and Red Clay Strays, the band delivers a raw, soulful, and electrifying musical experience.

Fronted by the captivating vocals of Gabbi Toribio and Jordan Cowley, Coyote Smoke is driven by the artistry of Tyler Kimball on guitar, Jeff Hayes on keys, Ann Kimball on drums, and Joe Richard on bass. Jaded Ravins w/ Cryin' Caleb Aaron

JULY 30 @ 7PM | DOORS 6PM | UPSTAIRS

A night of soulful Americana, country rock, & swampy outlaw blues.

Jaded Ravins members Kelly Ravin and Halle Jade began performing together in 2017 after Halle joined Kelly in the recording of his 5th highly acclaimed album “Engine”.

Ravin, former lead singer and guitarist of  Waylon Speed now performs his soulful americana, and country rock originals with Halle Jade. Halle’s tasty harmonies and Kelly’s powerful voice along with their engaging entertainment style make them a dynamic and expressive duo.

Kelly and Halle, who have been called a modern day Johnny and June, perform in large and small venues from New England to Nashville. Whether they’re playing at home in backcountry bars, or in big city clubs, Jaded Ravins are always ready to pour their hearts out on stage.

Cryin Caleb Aaron is a singing, songwriting, guitar-playing one-man band from Maine. Playing his own style of roots rock ‘n’ roll/country/twang/punk, his influences creep out from the shadows stretched over several decades of underground song, from Hank Williams to Bo Diddley, Sinéad O’Connor to The Gun Club, and Dead Moon to Lead Belly. With equal parts cynicism and pathos, his melodic, rousing songs are almost always laced with desperation, dealing with existential crisis, lonesomeness, regret, alienation, love, and armageddon.

STL GLD w/ Brandie Blaze

AUGUST 2 @ 11PM | DOORS 11PM | UPSTAIRS

STL GLD blends elements of Hip Hop, Rock, Punk, & Cinematic Orchestra together for an unforgettable experience.

Formed in 2014 by Moe Pope and producer The Arcitype, STL GLD’s powerful message and exhilarating live show has quickly earned them the reputation as one the most exciting bands to come out of New England.

On the surface, they are a Hip Hop band. However, through their captivating performances, STL GLD (pronounced STILL GOLD) blends elements of Hip Hop, Rock, Punk, and Cinematic Orchestra together for an unforgettable experience.

Because of this, STL GLD were crowned winners of “Live Artist of the Year” at the 2018 Boston Music Awards and “Boston’s Best Band” by Improper Bostonian in the same year.

Their sophomore album ‘Torch Song’ (BMAs “Album of the Year” in 2017) paved the way for an exciting year for the band, getting to share the stage with the likes of Eminem, Khalid, and The Roots.

Their third studio album, ‘The New Normal’ continued the band’s evolution, allowing them to set new precedents by building collaborations with the Museum of Fine Arts and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

When the pandemic struck, the band was knees-deep into creating their fourth studio album. With the inability to share the same space together for some time, and the world changing around them so dramatically, so did their album. Inspired by the fierce and emotional determination exhibited by John Boyega following the murder of George Floyd, Pope found a kindred spirit in the actor, sharing the same anger and frustration with the world’s continual mistreatment of people of color. The toll this takes on his mental health became the centerpiece of this album, and the inspiration from Boyega fueled his will to fight for balance; the title ‘Rock Boyega’ was born.

Brandie Blaze is a hip hop artist from Boston, Massachusetts. Inspired by female rappers such as Lil’ Kim and Missy Elliot, Blaze’s raw lyrics and dynamic stage presence allows her to compete with the boys and rep for the ladies. An activist and self proclaimed trap feminist, her hard hitting bars are how she stands up for herself and Black women everywhere. Starting as a singer as a child, Brandie transitioned to poetry and then rap as it became clear that vocal prowess wasn’t her strong suit. Blaze’s mission is to celebrate people that identify as women and femmes through the language of hip hop.

FUST

Fust w/ Dead Gowns & Deer Isle

AUGUST 12 @ 8PM | DOORS 7PM | UPSTAIRS

Country storytelling & small town poetry combine over some rollicking twangy indie for some damn fine music that’s as fun as it is literate.

Fust — the Durham, North Carolina-based band — announce their new album, Big Ugly, out March 7th via Dear Life Records. Big Ugly arrives after the release of 2024’s Songs of the Rail––“one of the best alt-country compilations…in a long, long time” (Paste) –– and 2023’s standout Genevieve, which unassumingly introduced new listeners to Fust’s unmistakable blend of “small-town poetry” (Mojo) with a familiar yet probing “country-tinged folk-rock” (KEXP) that made it “one of the most fun rock records of the year” (Pitchfork).

Big Ugly finds Fust taking its “gutsy, blue-collar Americana” (New Commute) further than it has before. Songwriter Aaron Dowdy pushes his obsessions with country-storytelling to more mystifying places, telling stories of Southern life teeming with utopian possibility that arises uniquely from the contradictions for which the south is infamously known. In this way, it is a record that could easily be filed on the record shelf alongside lyric-forward indie or Southern rock, as well as on the bookshelf amongst the throngs of Southern literature hellbent on proving the elegance of grittiness. Big Ugly is also Fust––above all a group of close friends––uncovering a freedom within their sincere form of loose and fried guitar rock, emboldened to deliver both their most intimate songwriting and biggest sound to date.

While perhaps “few voices can write a song quite like Aaron Dowdy” (Paste), it is clear upon listening that Big Ugly is an album of fully recognizable voices. One hears in the music the years of interplay between Avery Sullivan (Sluice) on Drums, Justin Morris (Sluice, Weirs) on guitar and vocals, Oliver Child-Lanning (Sluice, Weirs) on bass and vocals, Frank Meadows on piano, John Wallace (Colamo) on guitar and vocals, and Libby Rodenbough (Mipso) on fiddle and vocals. Big Ugly is also the second collaboration with the Asheville-based engineer Alex Farrar, recorded together throughout the summer of 2024 at Drop of Sun Studio. And with the help of many friends including Merce Lemon, Dave Hartley (The War on Drugs), and John James Tourville (The Deslondes), Big Ugly is exactly what one feels it to be: a huge group of people gathered together, stumbling upon songs amidst long days and even longer nights.

How does one cope with the pang of desire? It’s the tender, sometimes volatile question that confronts and transforms Geneviève Beaudoin on her debut full-length as Dead Gowns, It’s Summer, I Love You, and I’m Surrounded by Snow. With a yowl, a whisper, or a candid, conversational affect, Beaudoin’s potent melodies and moody, varied arrangements invoke a story of dissatisfaction, intimacy, and transition throughout the record’s twelve songs.

A deft lyricist with a sweeping range of poetic color and texture, Beaudoin paints her story in dark romantics. She presents a woman in the high summer of adulthood deciphering life’s capacity to fulfill desires or let them go painfully unmet. These cravings – to be touched, to be known, to have just one more encounter with someone lost to time – are a lacuna that Beaudoin prods at with the curiosity of an artist only satiated by the full expression of a feeling.

Tracking for It’s Summer,… began in the early years of the pandemic, coming together across a patchwork of sessions that spread out over the following years as the band also recorded, released, and toured the 2022 EP How (and its 2023 Vinyl Me, Please extended edition). In the album’s final form, we find the unique sounds of the Maine locales that hosted those sessions – a desacralized church on coastal Deer Isle, an old gymnasium on Peaks Island, and various home studios – and the hands who shaped the record, including Beaudoin’s longtime collaborator and co-producer Luke Kalloch and a tight circle of East Coast instrumentalists.

Though never named outright, Beaudoin’s home in Maine – and its ragged, granite-strewn coastline – is an evocative character inhabiting the album, a force even more implacable than Beaudoin’s emotions. Also present is the acute awareness of time passing – the album swelters between seasons, taking the proverbial sweater on and off as the months change and experiences, relationships, and versions of Beaudoin bloom and wither.

The first season of It’s Summer,… opens with the question, “How Can I?” where hand-plucked, meandering guitar voicings widen into a vast, vernal landscape. Punctuated by percussion and an urgent wall of electricity and guitars, Beaudoin dredges through the mud, withholding truth from a loved one and feeling the relationship rot in turn. On the second track, “Wet Dog,” there’s a marked change as Beaudoin fervently pursues what she wants, careening through the feeling like “a horse cut from the carousel” while a walking groove simmers with the loose tinge of psych rock.

“There’s a sense of freedom by starting in an autobiographical place and then expanding into fiction,” Beaudoin says of her approach to writing about lived experiences. “I learn so much about what has happened by exploring what could have been.” On side B cut “Swimmer,” the track opens with a phone call between two people transformed by time and memory, who later are “burning indigo” on a rocky beach. “It’s raining and they’re like dogs,” Beaudoin says of those hopeless lovers. But as her lyrics reveal, the scene on the beach never happens because the phone call never went through. “While many of these songs can read like scenes between two characters, it’s ultimately one-sided visions,” she said.

Autumn arrives as the record progresses, and Beaudoin’s perspective on desire matures, expanding outside the boundaries of romantic love to a more nuanced perspective on family and community. In “Brother,” there is a sleepy, breezy call for reconciliation that stings with the feeling of estrangement, while in “Burnout,” Beaudoin quietly reflects on her maternal lineage. Tempering regret with nostalgia, she recalls idyllic summers spent and perhaps squandered in youthful preoccupation in the urgently paced “Kid 1.” “I want to feed stale bread to swans / when love was a daydream in her lawn,” sings Beaudoin over a spacious arrangement of loose, airy drums and the grassy swells of guitars. The response in “Kid 2” is a distanced reverie, a sun-soaked dream recorded during a December snowstorm, a stark juxtaposition captured in Beaudoin’s gripping vocals over a cold, dampened piano accompaniment.

As if you’re watching a photographer change a lens, you can feel Beaudoin widen the scope of her introspection as time passes. She candidly maneuvers through the isolation of chronic illness and loneliness and reveals another part of herself on the tender, languorous “See People,” inflected with pedal steel and the swooning, cutting admission “I need to see people / I live on my phone.” Then there’s the assured edge of “Bad Habit” and “Maladie,” where Beaudoin tries to stave off preoccupation by creating distance. Even still, her desires are never assuaged; they burn under the surface with a thinly veiled intensity. As Beaudoin cries at the upper reaches of her brightest register, “You know what I want / and I can’t have it / it’s a bad habit,” her desire revealed again after an attempt to conceal it.

There’s an uncanny well of power behind her willingness to inspect, reveal, and, at times, submit to her desire. The record is a stirring compilation of raw, passionate folk-rock that calls to mind the music of Cat Power, PJ Harvey, and Big Thief. Pulled from a segment of Eileen Miles’ poem, ‘Shhh,’ the album’s title, It’s Summer, I Love You, and I’m Surrounded by Snow, evokes a feeling of disorientation and the inevitability of change. External and internal forces charge Beaudoin, her inner world shifting much like the dizzying change of the seasons. “We get swept up in the blizzard, and then we are set down in the hot salty haze of August,” she says, remembering the Maine winters of her childhood.

While we can’t change the weather, we can soften the blow of change, and Beaudoin resolves the record with the sparse, warm sprawl of “Sand Plumb.” Inviting breath and reflection, she asks, “How do I become the water?” –  revealing a desire to dissolve and flow freely through the seasons, the months, the years. In the hum of a solitary electric guitar, Beaudoin holds her longing in the balance, no longer overcome but embodied. By its end, the album resembles the coastal pull of Beaudoin’s childhood. These songs will pick you up and put you down again, transformed, raw, and satiated.

Pythagoras & Max Wareham

AUGUST 18 @ 7PM | DOORS 6PM | UPSTAIRS

Join us for a night of mighty fine pickin’.

Pythagoras began in a sweltering college dorm in the mountains of East Tennessee. Their roots in traditional bluegrass blend with a fresh, contemporary edge bring listeners across genres and generations to their shows.

Pythagoras features an international lineup of talented musicians, all now calling Johnson City, Tennessee, home: Grant Dresnok on guitar, Gracie Grossman on fiddle, Gabriel Hebert on banjo, Joe Henson on mandolin, and Lexi Wagnitz on upright bass. In 2024, the band recorded and released their debut album, Theorem, and embarked on their first international tour, leading up to the Westport Folk Festival in Ireland. Their relentless drive and ability to connect with audiences have quickly earned them a reputation as one of the most exciting young bands in bluegrass. From bustling festivals and clubs to intimate listening rooms, weddings, and private events, Pythagoras delivers a memorable, unique musical experience and energy to every show.

Despite their roots in tradition, the ever-changing nature of the music industry keeps their sights set firmly on the future. Whether you’re a lifelong bluegrass fan or new to the genre, a Pythagoras show offers something for all music lovers.

Max Wareham is a banjo player, songwriter, and author based in Boston, MA. He plays with the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band and appears on their Grammy-nominated album Calling You From My Mountain.

After two years of touring with Peter Rowan, Max recorded his own album, Daggomit!—coming out February 21, 2025. The record features an all-star cast including Chris Eldridge and David Grier on guitar, Laura Orshaw on fiddle, Chris Henry on mandolin, Mike Bub on bass, Larry Atamanuik on snare drum, and Peter Rowan as guest vocalist and producer. Recorded by multi-Grammy-winning engineer Sean Sullivan, the album blends soulful original songs with a deep respect for the early pioneers of bluegrass banjo.

Max’s passion for bluegrass history also led him to write Rudy Lyle: The Unsung Hero of the Five String Banjo, a book that dives into the life and music of Rudy Lyle—one of the first banjo players with Bill Monroe. The book includes detailed transcriptions of Lyle’s recorded breaks, interviews with legendary banjo players and Lyle’s family, and rare, previously unpublished photos.

Outside of bluegrass, Max has a wide-ranging musical background. He studied jazz guitar at the New School in New York, co-wrote and co-produced the album Cousin Moon, played bass in the psych-pop band Sun Parade, and released music under the name “Sir Orfeo.”

Clean Freak, Dummy Ache, The Streaks (aka Muddy Ruckus), & aLEX kEATON

AUGUST 20 @ 7PM | DOORS 6PM | UPSTAIRS

Stacked night of indie bands for fans of psych & post-punk.

Clean Freak is a New Hampshire-born sonic panic attack—equal parts rock, indie grit, post-punk sneer, and psychedelic whiplash. They’re not here to make you feel good. They’re here to scrape the barnacles off your soul with jagged riffs, basement sweat, and the kind of melodic chaos that makes your teeth itch and your heart remember it still has a pulse.

Max, Sam, and Rich met in Brooklyn’s grimy underbelly, swapping sweat and feedback on stages built to collapse. Years later, washed ashore in New England, they formed Dummy Ache—less a band, more a beautiful racket born of restlessness.

Think Galaxie 500’s haze, Yo La Tengo’s spiral freak-outs, Dinosaur Jr.’s fuzzed-out fury, and Slowdive’s reverb avalanches—all erupting from just three guys. It shouldn’t sound this big. But it does. And it hurts in all the right ways.

Shadow & Salt aren’t just a band—they’re a séance in slow motion. A Portland/Boston duo conjuring low rock, soul, slowcore, and psych like they’re dialing into some ancient static-drenched radio from the beyond. It’s moody. It’s molten. It’s music that doesn’t ask permission—it just drips in, slow and strange, and rearranges your insides.

The Streaks pulse straight out of the scar-tissue rhythm section of Erika Stahl and Ryan Flaherty, the hardened, road-worn duo behind Muddy Ruckus. These aren’t weekend warriors. These are lifers. Battle-tested. Feedback-fed. And still chasing the ghost of the perfect, bleeding note.

aLEX kEATON is a four-headed Portland hydra spewing gloriously messy indie rock—equal parts heartbreak, hairballs, and existential dread wrapped in fuzz pedals and cheap beer. They write songs about love, cats, and whatever else claws its way out of their collective frontal lobe at 3 a.m. It’s sloppy. It’s sincere. It’s a beautiful wreck you’ll want to crawl inside and live in.

ClubD'Elf MonoMeansOne Poster FINAL INSTAGRAM

Club d'Elf & Mono Means One

AUGUST 23 @ 6PM | DOORS 5PM | UPSTAIRS

The incredible Club d’Elf make their long overdue return to the Press Room w/ groovy up-and-comers Mono Means One.

Club d’Elf has been helping audiences lose track of time for twenty seven years with its mesmerizing synthesis of Moroccan traditional music and electronic, dubbed-out funk. Circling about bassist/composer Mike Rivard, each Club d’Elf performance features a different line-up, drawn from a constellation of some of the most creative improvisers from the jazz, DJ, rock & world music scenes of Boston, NYC and beyond. Named Jazz Act of 2023 in the Boston Music Awards, the bands music draws from a startlingly wide spectrum of styles that goes beyond any single category, including hip hop, electronica, avant garde, prog-rock and dub. Under the tutelage of member Brahim Fribgane (who was born in Casablanca) the band absorbed Moroccan trance music, which is now an essential part of the mix. Fribgane passed away in early 2024, but his spirit lives on in the music, particularly in Rivard’s commanding playing of the Moroccan sintir – an instrument he learned to play through the guidance of Fribgane, as well as Gnawa masters Hassan Hakmoun and Mahmoud Guinia. Trance forms the central core of the Club d’Elf aesthetic, weaving together the band’s various influences.

The bands most recent album, ‘You Never Know’ (2022), garnered critical acclaim and rose to #2 on the Relix chart. The record unfurls upon kaleidoscopic clouds of spiced smoke, shifting from chopped dub-jazz through trance epics that reimagine Boston as a city of bazaars. Club d’Elf pay tribute to the music and musicians who have been primary influences, with half the album being covers of Gnawa, Miles Davis, Joe Zawinul, Moroccan band Nass el-Ghiwane, and Frank Zappa. The other half consists of original music inspired by Rivard’s personal journey into darkness following a near death experience in the remote jungle of the Peruvian Amazon. Sessions for a new album began in January 2024, with a Fall 2025 release expected.

Mono Means One is a psychedelic prog trio and the brainchild of bassist and composer John Ferrara, best known as the bass player and co-founder of the acclaimed world fusion band “Consider the Source.” Mono Means One’s sound contains melancholic melodies, rich sonic textures with Drum ‘N’ Bass grooves and Mathrock sensibilities. Half composed and half improvised, the music is often dark, with moments of calm serenity and other times heavy, oscillating between chill grooves to almost unbearable intensity. Originally composed entirely on the bass guitar, John paired up with Rob Madore (Drums) and Isaac Young (Keys) to add intensely nuanced beats with futuristic colorful sonic textures. All three members produce a sound that is powerful and unique all to their own.

Ferrara has been dubbed the “Unsung Genius” of bass tapping by bass sensation Charles Berthoud, is a teacher at Scotts Bass Lessons, and has been featured in Bass Magazine, NoTreble, Bass Musician magazine among many other publications.

MOJOHAND

Mojohand w/ Regals & Bird Friend

AUGUST 27 @ 7PM | DOORS 6PM | UPSTAIRS

Welcome the absolutely scorching indie country rock band Mojohand to Portsmouth—w/ the most excellent Regals & Bird Friend opening.

NJ/NYC based Americana-rockers Mojohand have been winning over audiences from Pittsburgh, PA to Austin, TX and everywhere in between since late-2016. Mojohand have played countless shows in dive bars, DIY basement venues, and at colleges, and clubs across New Jersey, New York, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Tennessee, New Hampshire, and Connecticut.

Mojohand have shared the stage with national and regional touring acts such as Oteil Burbridge (Dead & Company, The Allman Brothers Band), Whitey Morgan, Jesse Daniel, Madisons, and The Englishtown Project to name a few.

The band released nine singles before their powerhouse debut album Songbook hit streaming in October 2021. With an ability to write both anthemic choruses and clever, listen-to-it-twice verses, Mojohand’s music keeps us wondering just exactly what decade this band is from – it’s hard to believe this band’s members are all on the lighter side of their 20s. “Songbook” was produced Sean Walsh of legendary Brooklyn-based bar band, The National Reserve and features guest performances by Walsh himself, John Lee Shannon (Circles Around The Sun), and Jonny Lam (Norah Jones, Miranda Lambert, David Byrne)

Mojohand have also hosted their own DIY music festival, Mojofest in New Jersey every summer since 2017. The sixth annual Mojofest took place on July 9th, 2022 in Toms River and included performances by 10 bands and multiple local vendors and artists selling their wares and was attended by over 300 people.

Regals is an alt-country rock band hailing from New Hampshire and Maine. Songwriter Ryan Rock Egan (yes, that’s his middle name) brings a powerful, harrowing voice to his heavy-hearted songwriting. He’s complimented by the rest of his band, holding it down with a machine of a rhythm section and a cosmic swirl of pedal steel & angular guitars. Ranging comparisons of bands like Lucero and Modest Mouse to acts like Jason Molina and Replacements have gotten the band more traction as of late as they’re set to self-release their first LP record in 2025. Current line up is singer/songwriter Ryan Rock Egan, Sean Merkle on drums, Chris J Brün on lead guitar, Mike Vinci on bass/vocals, and Lucas Troy on pedal steel.

Bird Friend is a band from Portsmouth, New Hampshire & Somerville, Massachusetts.

Rooted in folk and DIY, Bird Friend’s sound also blends elements of punk, early psych and garage rock, slowcore and alt-country. Noted for its literate lyricism and unique guitar work, Bird Friend has been on the DIY scene for over ten years, performing in basements, bars, and clubs all over the United States.

Restless and experimental by nature, the band has collaborated with artists, musicians, and poets to create an identity that sounds like nothing else, yet is unmistakably theirs.

GOOSEBERRY

Gooseberry w/ The Rock Dwellers

SEPTEMBER 1 @ 7PM | DOORS 6PM | UPSTAIRS

NYC indie rockers Gooseberry return to the Press Room w/ local faves the Rock Dwellers for a hell of a Labor Day.

Brooklyn-based trio Gooseberry, formed in 2019, melds alternative rock, indie, and blues to craft their distinctive sound. Comprising Asa Daniels (guitar, vocals), Evin Rossington (drums), and Will Hammond (bass), the band has racked up millions of streams and has garnered praise from editorial stalwarts Galore, Under the Radar, and more. They’ve become integral to NYC’s music scene, headlining venues like Bowery Ballroom, as well as supporting notable touring acts such as Ringo Starr, BabyJake, and Tanner Usrey.

In September 2024, Gooseberry released their debut full-length album, All My Friends Are Cattle. They delivered the first taste of the LP in the form of gritty alt-rock single “Kikiyon”. The album was tracked over the course of three months, predominantly at Precision Sound Studios in New York City. Drums were recorded by Grammy-winner James ‘Jimmy T’ Meslin (Dream Theater, John Petrucci, Rush). Grammy-nominated engineer Colin Bryson (Zach Bryan, J Balvin, Willow Avalon) served as producer and recording engineer (reprising his role from the Validate Me EP). Grammy-winner Phil Joly (The Strokes, Lana Del Rey, Daft Punk) mixed the record, and Jennica Best (Colatura) mastered it. Honorary fourth member Dan Janis (Baked Goods) provided saxophone and flute for a handful of tunes. The record has already been streamed 1.5M+ times and counting.

This debut full-length record represents Gooseberry’s most ambitious project yet, showcasing the expansive distance they cover, from punch-you-in-the-mouth punk rock to lyrically-driven singer-songwriter to atmospheric prog rock. Glide declared the “Gooseberry is positioned to have a significant role in the modern rock scene.” Though powered by heavy 90s alternative influences, this LP showcases what Gooseberry can be: an exciting amalgamation of many genres and sounds, taking the listener on a journey that never once leaves the ear tired and consistently keeps the mind guessing where they will head next.

Long ago, atop a Rock in the woods, sat a community of friends and fools. As the community molded and grew, the form it took began to expand—from garages to basements to stages to headphones. The sounds it made shook the land, knocking laces from shoes and fear from minds. Soon the sounds left the outskirts, venturing far off into the world; toppling trees, rippling waters, and melting bullets into flowers. That community of which all was borne, was The Rock Dwellers! A four-piece rock group playing original jams, moshable tones, and some covers you can sing your heart out to.

Our motto is our livelihood– “We have fun.”

Mighty Mystic w/ Royal Hammer

SEPTEMBER 5 @ 8PM | DOORS 7PM | UPSTAIRS

One of the leaders of the U.S. reggae scene is making his return to the Press Room to shake our floors w/ that sweet Jamaican sound.

Mighty Mystic is considered as one of the leaders in the U.S. Reggae scene and labeled by many as one of the more prolific artists to develop outside of Jamaica. He has gripped the scene with ferocious conviction and an uncanny ambition worthy to be mentioned among the greats. He has gone from being a fan of reggae music to being a contributor to the art. Mighty Mystic came on the scene in 2006 after scoring his first international hit with the song “Riding on the Clouds.” However, it wasn’t until the release of his first album “Wake up the World” (2010) that he became a household name. “Wake up the World” boasted several standouts, such as “Revolution,” “Riding on the Clouds,” “Original Love,” and “Slipped Away” with appearances from reggae icon Shaggy and roots rocker Lutan Fyah. Mystic continues to wake up the world with his high energy, message driven brand of reggae music which he emphatically calls “HARD ROOTS.” It is this unique spin on classic reggae blended with Hip Hop & Rock that has catapulted him to the forefront of today’s Reggae Revival. Mighty Mystic is also the younger brother of current Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness. When asked, does being the brother of Prime Minister Holness have any impact on your music? Mystic simply says “Andrew has a job to do and so do I, impact or not we both have our own mission to complete”.

Royal Hammer is a seven-piece roots reggae group from Portland, Maine. Heavily influenced by Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, and Roots Radics, Royal Hammer takes pride in the authenticity of their sound. Michael Taylor (The Awesome, Rustic Overtones) is backed-up by a heavy rhythm section including Gary Gemetti (Rustic Overtones) on drums, Tyler Quist (Jaw Gems) on keys, and bass player Stu Mahan (Nat Osbourne Band, London Souls), with Ryan Zoidis (Rustic Overtones, Soulive) and Lucas Desmond (Model Airplane) on saxes, and new addition Jamie Bifulco on trombone. Royal Hammer’s grooves are deep and infectious. Royal Hammer has shared the stage with reggae legends Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and Barrington Levy and has backed up international reggae artists Marty Dread and Legendary Glen DaCosta of Zap Pow and the Wailers. JANE & MARY

Jane O'Neill & Mary Moore

SEPTEMBER 7 @ 7PM | DOORS 6PM | UPSTAIRS

A lovely night of indie Americana coming to you all the way from D.C. & Nashville.

JANE O’NEILL cultivated her love for songwriting in the landscapes of the Midwest, enveloped in the records that reverberated throughout her family home: John Denver, Norah Jones, and Bonnie Raitt to name a few.

Growing up, Sundays were dedicated to music instruction for the whole family, a tradition that transformed ordinary dinners during the week into soulful music sessions. Being one of twelve children in her home, Jane had a small symphony to practice with, which nowadays has translated seamlessly to her ability as frontwoman of her band.

Eventually she’d leave behind the shores of Lake Michigan, which is an inspiration in much of her work, for the charm of the Chesapeake Bay on the East Coast, finding a home in the queer community in DC which is where she’s built her career in Americana. Her music resonates with a subtle longing for home though, reflecting her sentimental spirit and the musical influences she grew up with. Described as “quietly confident Americana”, Jane writes songs that tell universal tales of love, self-discovery, and resilience, all nestled within a voice that upon first listen, you’d swear belongs on the record shelf next to the greats.

In 2023, Jane unveiled her debut EP, “A Little More Free,” a small collection of songs she’s worked on for most of her life. Jane released her second EP, self-titled, in March of 2024.

Mary Moore is a folk-pop/indie-pop artist living in Nashville, TN. With powerhouse vocals and storytelling lyrics, she has been captivating stages and connecting to people from all walks of life. Mary’s vocals are comparable to the power of Brandi Carlile and Florence + The Machine, but also with the sweet, quirkiness of Regina Spektor.

Mary grew up in Richmond, VA where she filled her life with music and performance. Mary played piano, french horn, and mellophone, and participated in dance, show choir, choir, musicals, marching band, and wind ensemble. Mary also was the lead singer for a classic rock cover band that toured in Virginia from age 13-18. Mary went to the University of Virginia for college where she became the Music Director of the award winning acapella group the Virginia Belles.

After graduating college, Mary relocated to Nashville, TN to hone her craft as an artist. Mary has found growing success as a force on stage, her music has been heard on Lightning 100 and Mary has played notable venues in Nashville like the Listening Room Cafe, the High Watt, and The Basement.

Mary’s debut EP “Rooted Heart” was released in the summer 2019, the songs gushing with imagery of the natural world and showcasing Mary’s writing and vocal chops. The title track “Redwoods” was promoted on NPR “All Things Considered” blog, helping the song and Mary reach a new audience. Mary followed up the EP release with a tour all over the US, playing house concerts and Sofar Sounds shows from the cobble stone streets of Boston to the Redwood forest in San Francisco. Mary has racked up 100k streams on her music and she has been gaining fans with her inviting stage presence and entrancing performances.

Mary released her 3rd studio EP “An Honest Thing” Feb 2025. The album asks the question – “what is it to be known and know others?” Mary’s theatrical soundscape, poetic language, and cheeky singing are bound to enchant you, and maybe just make you question your life purpose all in one song.

HIGH TEA

High Tea w/ Milk St. & Bird Friend

SEPTEMBER 15 @ 7PM | DOORS 6PM | UPSTAIRS

Start your week off w/ three indie folk favorites.

High Tea, the folk-punk “story-yelling” duo hailing from Massachusetts, is what happens when a yarn-spinning blues guitarist meets a harmony-obsessed punk. Isabella DeHerdt and Isaac Eliot have come together to fill spaces with homegrown tales and booming vocals. Their songs are ripe with existential angst, weaving narratives of growing up, going wild, and always coming back to the ones you love.

Their previous releases, Scuba Diving, Old Cowboy, and The Wick And The Flame were featured on playlists, radio shows, and publications like The Boston Globe, The Greenfield Recorder (among others). The title track of Old Cowboy led them to be chosen as one of WBUR’s top 4 Massachusetts Tiny Desk entries of 2022. They toured The Wick And The Flame on the West Coast, in New England, and throughout other US States and received write ups from Atwood’s Magazine, The Boston Herald, and more. They were nominated for the New England Music Awards Best Americana Act in 2023, and were selected to perform in the Grassy Hill Emerging Artist Showcase at Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in 2025.

Despite its name, there’s nothing little about High Tea’s upcoming album, A Small Notion. Listeners are led through an inspiringly personal journey, from the disoriented yearning of loss, to an appreciation of the brutal realities of rough living, to tender reflections on past mistakes, to an ultimate acceptance of the all-too-human need for community and care. As ever, the Massachusetts duo is heavily committed to marrying intensely beautiful lyrical storytelling with congruent and energetically contagious instrumental arrangements. Without a doubt, A Small Notion is some of High Tea’s most honest, eye-opening, and cathartic work yet.

Northeast Emo Described As “A sonic tapestry of emo, Americana, and unbridled creativity” by TJLP Magazine, foundations of Milk St. date back to 2018, originally under the name Spaced. Officially launched in 2022 with the release of their debut album Spaced – an ode to their first name. With the release of their newest album V3RM0NT, The Milk St. boys are currently on tour through New England!

JAKE SWAMP

Jake Swamp and the Pine w/ Harrison Goodell

SEPTEMBER 26 @ 8PM | DOORS 7PM | UPSTAIRS

Drawing on influences from Americana, folk, singer-songwriter, bluegrass, & pop, Jake Swamp and the Pine was “born to be heard live.”

At the end of a long day traversing the White Mountains, when the sun has laid down behind the horizon and the shush of the forest descends, you sit by the campfire and crack open the cold beverage of your choice. Surrounded by those you love, you realize this is the best possible place you could be right now.

This is the feeling that Jake Swamp and the Pine captures with their music. The name Jake Swamp and the Pine provides that context, as it was inspired by the Jake Swamp pine tree – the tallest tree in MA and is honoring Jake Swamp – a prominent environmentalist.

At the end of 2022, JSATP released their debut album, Simpson and Banks, named after the cross streets in Somerville, MA where the band was formed. Within those cross streets, hours and hours of practice, laughing, writing, struggling with creating social content had been held. There were many moments of life that were revisited because of the writing and reflecting that happened there, so it felt only fitting to honor that with the album name. Those beautiful and confusing moments of life are captured and distilled into each song on the album.

Simpson and Banks received praise from many prestigious publications including Americana UK, who noted that a “Gloriously atmospheric vocals carry a set of passionate, emotive and classy songs.” (read more)

Jake Swamp and the Pine songs range from powerful acoustic anthems to knee-slapping hoedowns to slow and somber waltzes, drawing on diverse influences from the Americana, folk, singer-songwriter, bluegrass, and pop. Country 102.5 said “Jake Swamp and the Pine was born to be heard live. You can feel the emotion in his guitar, and his vocals take you on winding journey, up and around bends of inflection. There’s sheer joy that resounds in the making of his craft. You can get all that just from listening to one song.” See for yourself, and come out to a show!

Harrison Goodell is a singer-songwriter from the Seacoast of New Hampshire, weaving indie-folk songs that feel like home—restless, familiar, and always shifting. Rooted in vivid storytelling, his music draws from the quiet hum of suburban streets, the vastness of the White Mountains, and the ache of trying to hold onto something fleeting. With raw vocals and emotive arrangements, he captures the tension between nostalgia and growth, staying and leaving, love and loss. His sound, while distinctly his own, lives somewhere between anthemic folk and confessional songwriting, earning comparisons to artists like Noah Kahan and The Lumineers.

Harrison’s dedication to his craft has led to sold-out shows and opening slots for artists including Sara Bareilles, JP Saxe, and The Lone Bellow. Named one of the Northeast’s top emerging artists, he was awarded a grant from The Portsmouth Music Hall to further support his artistic development. With new music on the way and writing sessions in Nashville with some of the industry’s most exciting collaborators, 2025 is shaping up to be a defining year.

His first band, “The Firewater Band,” played southern rock, rock, and blues for their high school friends in the hang-out barn on the family rural property. In his 20’s Dean continued playing drums for “MacBeth,” a hard rock band in Portsmouth, NH—playing such venues as Rosa’s and The Ranger Club and placing as a finalist in radio station WHEB’s rock band competitions. Over the next three decades Dean played drums, rhythm, and lead guitar in several club and event bands including “Grizzly,” “Radio Flyer, “ “The Undertow,” and “Another Round.” Dean later fronted the “Dean Irons Band” and “The Crazy River Band,” as well as performed solo gigs. He has written and produced 2 CDs of original music, “Love Is” and “Second Chance,” on which he played guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards. He counts Steve Miller as one of his major influences.

Michael Cain, Lead Guitar

Michael has been playing musical instruments since he was 5 and has been a guitarist in bands since the age of 12. He has played in several bands throughout his life and adapted to a variety of genres including blues, country, rock, Americana, and southern rock. Before relocating from Georgia in 2023 he was the lead guitarist in “Dilligaf,” which won the traditional artist of the year category at the 2021 Georgia Country Music Awards.

Rene Giust, Bass & Vocals

Rene Giust is a versatile and experienced bass player and vocalist with a musical history spanning over three decades. Originally from Boston, Rene began playing piano as a teenager.

Later, while in the Navy, he switched to a more travel-friendly instrument, the guitar. Upon leaving the military, he settled in the Seattle area where he shifted his focus to the bass guitar and continued to pursue his passion for music, performing in several cover and original acts. In 2024, Rene returned to New England, bringing his wealth of experience and passion for music back to his roots. He draws inspiration from popular music of the late 50’s up to some of today’s music with his favorite era being the 60’s & 70’s.

Sean Tracey, Keyboards

Sean began his musical career in the 70’s at 13-years-old, playing keys and singing in rock, pop, and wedding bands. Sean graduated from Brown University with a minor in Electronic Music Composition. He conducted the St. Anselm’s Jazz Band for two years, then began a career as a film director and advertising agency owner and creative director. ALI MCGUIRK

Ali McGuirk Album Release Show

OCTOBER 12 @ 7PM | DOORS 6PM | UPSTAIRS

Ali McGuirk returns with a new album (Watertop) that elevates her signature soulful & smoldering sound to new heights.

Ali McGuirk has never been a church mouse. Her 2022 album, Til It’s Gone, was met with widespread acclaim and praised for its “earthy tenderness and smart introspection” (Boston Herald). She now returns with a new album, Watertop,  that elevates her signature soulful and smoldering sound to new heights—this time, the production is richer, and the message is unflinching.

It’s hard to pinpoint the exact moment that led to the freedom in McGuirk’s songwriting on “Watertop.” Perhaps it was when she began treating social activism—and her care for others—as a spiritual practice. This transformation gave Watertop its raison d’etre, which comes at you quickly with the opening track, “Love Goes First.” With Watertop McGuirk takes a magnifying glass to the complexities of human and societal value, unraveling the meanings of care, empathy, love, and even greed. At first listen, her words aren’t always what they seem. But the richness of McGuirk’s voice, the lucidity of her production, and the power of her delivery guide you to the truth.

MOMENT OF GREEN

A Moment Of Green w/ Slim Volume

OCTOBER 18 @ 6PM | DOORS 5PM | UPSTAIRS

While their rock music incorporates funk, jam, blues, jazz, & pop, the bold four-part harmonies are what set A Moment Of Green apart.

A Moment of Green is a band that brings together musicians from a wide variety of backgrounds and influences to produce their take on rock music. The music ranges from the guitar heavy sound of “Knock me Down” to the singer-songwriter acoustic sensibility in the song “Hurricane”, to the groovy highway driving “Roadside Attraction”. While their rock music incorporates funk, jam, blues, jazz, and pop, the bold four-part harmonies are what provide the band a sound that is unmistakably their own.

Slim Volume launched in earnest as a full band in January of 2023, releasing a string of singles through the early months of the year, and landing some prominent local gigs. In their inaugural year, Slim Volume played about 40 shows; everything from basements and bars to private events, radio spots, and local festivals. With their versatile sound, there is truly no room that Slim Volume cannot play to.

“I can’t think of anyone in the area that quite sounds like you guys,” says Matt Connarton on his radio show Matt Connarton Unleashed (93.5 WMNH). “There’s a cohesion. The songs sound like the same band, but you can tell there’s a mix of influences.”

So far, the band has released 10 songs that stretch their “indie-folk rock” label to its limits—if you ask the band members, their music doesn’t have just one genre. Their songs call upon eclectic influences and feel familiar but wholly original.

BRIANNE DUNNE 2

Brian Dunne: Clams Tour

OCTOBER 22 @ 7PM | DOORS 6PM | UPSTAIRS

Imagine if Sam Lipsyte wrote the lyrics for Billy Joel’s Glass Houses, or if Jason Isbell cut his teeth in scuzzy NYC rock clubs…

If you’re a romantic, an artist, or an otherwise sentient being looking for a reason to believe, consider Clams Casino your wake up call. The fourth solo album from New York songwriter Brian Dunne is a burst of energy, a colossal leap forward, and a prolonged moment of direct eye-contact from one of this generation’s sharpest observers of young American life. Self-produced at Dunne’s home in Red Hook, Brooklyn, Clams Casino was inspired by the classic songwriting form of working-class blues and placed in an unmistakably modern context. “Is it so bad to want a good life?” he asks in the opening title track, and these bracing, hook-filled songs navigate our ongoing negotiations through disappointment and rejection, loss and isolation, and ultimately, hard-earned self-determination.

Following his acclaimed 2023 solo album Loser on the Ropes, released on Kill Rock Stars, and two word-of-mouth successes from his cheeky supergroup Fantastic Cat, Dunne sought to craft a more cohesive statement, based on the some of the archetypes he’s observed throughout his life as a working musician and touring artist around the world. “Loser on the Ropes was about failure,” he reflects, “but there was a fight that was ongoing—which is inherently optimistic. You’re still in the ring.” Now his observations arrive once the final bell has rung and the crowd has wandered home: “The bad guys won. What are we going to do?

” To answer these questions, Dunne kept his focus tight. He worked with only a few collaborators—Dan Drohan on drums, Alex Wright on organ for the climactic ballad “Living It Backwards”—and constructed his narratives as if drafting a tight-knit screenplay. “I could just see the characters play out—who gets to leave and who gets to stay, who gets to keep living the dream and who has it downsized. I was thinking about how it all comes down to class.”

While the lyrics circle scenes of modern despair—stretches of days when the only texts come from food delivery services, childhood dreams chipping away like a sticker on a venue mirror—the music is the most uplifting and hard-hitting in Dunne’s catalog. Accompanying himself on nearly all instruments, he sought inspiration from an era of classic rock when artists tentatively embraced the new wave sound of the late-’70s, incorporating keyboards and synths without delving fully into the digital gloss of the CD era. The result can feel like if novelist Sam Lipsyte wrote the lyrics for Billy Joel’s Glass Houses, or if the Jason Isbell of Southeastern cut his teeth in scuzzy NYC rock clubs as opposed to Nashville bars.

You can imagine nearly every song as the peak of Dunne’s celebrated live set, packing in the singalong choruses and quotable lyrics from front-to-back. Take “Play the Hits,” the first song Dunne wrote for the record, with a punchy arrangement worthy of the Heartbreakers. In another songwriter’s hands, the subject matter—exploring themes of aging and self-destruction with alternating tones of bitter resentment, fatalist drama, and writhing self-inquiry—might come off as harsh. But Dunne approaches his characters with such empathy, detail, and humor that you can’t help but root for them—even when they barely have the strength to get through the day. “Play the hits, kid/Just like your dad did/Sometimes it’s time to go,” he sings in the chorus, injecting each word with enough warmth to make it feel like a pep talk.

Some of Dunne’s devotion comes from how personally he takes the subject matter. “I’ve never been at the center of alternative culture,” he admits, “but it’s always been very important to me. Every generation has its American dream, and it felt like the millennial American dream was a little more urban. Everybody seemed to have some sort of foot in the counterculture, whether they worked for Morgan Stanley or they played in a rock band. It felt like, as people got older, I started to see I was believing in something that was maybe a little bit of a facade.”

This balance between ascendant aspirations and crushing reality—particularly through the eyes of formal idealists leaving the big city—forms the thematic heart of the record. In “Rockland County” and “I Watched the Light,” we hear contrasting portraits of characters who make the decision to move back to their hometown: the former is confidently (and hilariously) relieved by their choice, while the other is haunted by the trail of dreams they left behind. Reflecting on the subject matter, Dunne laughs: “When you’re young and you see yourself as the little engine that could, you’re asking for a struggle. But there’s always an out: Have you ever considered the road more commonly traveled? In the end, maybe all that matters is that you keep moving.”

Even in conversation, it’s a classic Brian Dunne observation: funny, sad, compassionate, twisting idiomatic language until you’re left questioning received wisdom and, hopefully, trusting your instincts a little more. In this way, Clams Casino is the rare rock record that manages to inspire without ignoring the darkness dominating our purview, whose subject matter feels authentically universal yet allergic to cliche, whose characters are equally clever and open-hearted. Just look at the narrator of “Some Room Left,” a tender ballad whose landscape feels as stark and anxious as Dunne has ever allowed into his songwriting. And yet, he observes, “the fittest of the cynics can be disarmed/By a kindly stranger asking how you are.” It sounds like he’s speaking from experience—on both sides of the conversation—and he’s ready to let in the world.

Christopher Paul Stelling & Tall Tall Trees

OCTOBER 29 @ 7PM | DOORS 6PM | UPSTAIRS

Two of the most exciting players & singers in Americana today are teaming up for one unforgettable night of fiery, intimate music.

Atlanta, Georgia based songwriter Christopher Paul Stelling has released 7 albums and played thousands of concerts across the US, Uk, and EU over the last decade. Stelling has mostly toured solo but has also supported Son Little, Mavis Staples, The Devil Makes Three, Ben Harper and many others. Stelling released a trio of albums for indie favorite Anti- records and has performed multiple times at Newport Folk Festival and on CBS Saturday Morning. Stelling is known for his intricate finger-style guitar work, road tested vocal delivery, and introspective lyrics.

Tall Tall Trees is the musical id of songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mike Savino, a pioneer in the realm of experimental, DIY banjo music. Accompanied by his trusty Banjotron 6500, a highly customized, electrified banjo and effects pedal setup, Savino has wowed audiences since the 2009 debut of his self-titled album with his eclectic and innovative blend of psychedelic folk, rock and world music. His work seems to actively evade comfortable definition, upon first listen one will recognize the tenderness of Cat Stevens, the melancholy introspection of Elliott Smith, the anthemic psychedelia of Pink Floyd, and a deep abiding respect for Earl Scruggs. Savino often performs solo, showcasing his fleet-footed loop pedal mastery, as well as alongside long-time collaborator and fellow innovator, Kishi Bashi. He has recently collaborated with fellow psych-banjo maestro JD Pinkus of the Butthole Surfers, releasing Ponder Machine, a psychedelic banjo opus on the Shimmy Disc label. Tall Tall Trees latest release and 5th LP, Stick to the Mystical I, featuring a collaboration with Josiah Wolf of the band Why? is out September 8th, 2023 on Joyful Noise Recordings.

Mike Savino had big plans for getting through the pandemic with his sanity intact. He built a recording studio in the basement of his home in Asheville, North Carolina, setting himself up to lay down the tracks for a new album. To help see them across the finish line, Savino invited longtime friend and drummer of indie rock mainstays WHY? Josiah Wolf to help him out. But once they set up their gear and started playing together, everything changed.

“I had a bunch of songs, but we didn’t use any of those at all,” Savino remembers. “We were so into improvising that we just started recording until we stumbled onto something that excited us both and chased that. Josiah’s knack for quirky and experimental beats brought me into places I’d never go alone.”

Rather than fight the creative tide, Savino and Wolf went with the flow. What came out of these sessions at Savino’s home studio, affectionately called GalleyTapes, was Stick to the Mystical I, a playful collection of songs that pulls liberally from the pair’s collective influences — folk, jazz, pop, hip-hop, noise rock — and ties all those strands together into one delirious psychedelic bundle. Savino, with his heavily modified 6-string electric banjo, is a master of looping textures, creating the perfect foil to Josiah’s explosive improvisatory drumming.

The bulk of the music on Stick to the Mystical I came about in spontaneous bursts, some of them built from first-take improvisations that they would then shape into the finished material heard on the album. It’s a new way of working for Savino, especially, who admits to being something of a perfectionist when it comes to his music.

FLORRY 2

Florry w/ special guest John Andrews & The Yawns

NOVEMBER 21 @ 8PM | DOORS 7PM | UPSTAIRS

Florry has twangy, scorching guitar licks for days & enough swagger to make the Rolling Stones proud. This is pure rock at its most fun.

A far cry from the cool, calculated distance and reserved posture that is all-too-familiar to the indie-rock sphere, Florry, the Philly-bred septet and songwriting vehicle of bandleader Francie Medosch, are marking their territory as a band resolving to do something very different: they are having a really good time out there.

Cutting her teeth in the Philadelphia DIY scene starting in 2019 as a student at Temple University, the early days of Florry found Medosch at the end of her teenage years releasing a slew of singles and EP’s in a familiar idiom of lo-fi bedroom recordings tinged with country melancholy. A lot has changed since then. Most importantly, perhaps, the project snowballed into a barn-burning seven piece rock band in the proceeding years; and without sacrificing any of the emotional immediacy that’s come to define Medosch’s brashly earnest, bleeding-heart lyrical style, you’re unlikely to find her lingering as much on the melancholy these days. Or, as Medosch plainly puts it in regards to Sounds Like… , the band’s forthcoming LP:

“The Jackass theme song was actually a really big influence on the new album”

The release of their 2023 formal full-length debut The Holey Bible (via Dear Life) found Medosch now flanked by six bandmates and trafficking in a wider, more rock-oriented approach with the bravado of someone with a new lease on life. With Jon Cox (Sadurn, Son of Barb) on pedal steel, John Murray on electric guitar, Colin Dennen on bass, Will Henrikson on fiddle, Katya Malison (Doll Spirit Vessel) on Vox, and Joey Sullivan (Bark Culturr) on drums, Florry 2.0 had arrived. The retooled seven-piece embraced a lengthy run of tours dialing in their new kinetic sound and freewheeling chemistry including runs with Fust, MJ Lenderman, Greg Freeman, and Real Estate. Greeted to critical acclaim upon its release, with positive notices from outlets including Pitchfork, Stereogum, Paste, and Brooklyn Vegan, the album quickly introduced Florry to an expanded audience and pointed a way forward for Medosch and the band at a time when the future wasn’t so clear.

“I had a job lined up selling insurance, I guess I figured that was that, you know?”

As it turns out, that was not that. A few days went by, and then the phone started ringing. From managers, from booking agents, from indie-rock elder statesman Kurt Vile, who took the band on the road in support of his 2023 Back to Moon Beach LP.

On the winkingly titled Sounds Like… , the band’s second full-length release via Dear Life, Florry is picking up right where they left off in 2023. Again upping the ante with a bigger, brighter, more abrasive sound that resembles something closer to Rolling Thunder Revue-era Bob Dylan than their humble DIY roots. Across ten tracks, the band wear their influences on their sleeve while carving out a space that is distinctly their own, blending raw honky-tonk grit and rich instrumental textures with the disarming sincerity and intimacy of the group’s lo-fi beginnings. It’s a record about searching—searching for home, for love, for meaning, and for a sound that captures it all.

As Medosch croons on the red-hot opening track, First it was a movie, then it was a book:

Last night i watched a movie

the movie made me sad

‘cause i saw myself in everyone

how’d they make a movie like that?

John Andrews is something of an open secret in a certain corner of the music scene: a versatile musician & animator. A film school drop out whose work hat-tips tradition as much as outsider anti-aesthetics. He’s spent over a decade on the DIY circuit, playing early house shows alongside then up-and-coming peers Weyes Blood and Daniel Bachman. Today he is still out there projecting his sketchy hand drawn animations during his performances in coffee shops, small galleries and non-traditional venues. Andrews’ painterly approach now introduces us to his version of New York City, the place he was bound to end up after years of dwelling in Pennsylvania farm towns and New Hampshire barns. There is handmade vibrancy to the world he’s imagined for us here: intimate moments seen from the interior, looking outward from hole-in-the-wall restaurants, theaters and the fragments of peace found within the restless and dirty street corners.

Love For The Underdog, his aptly titled fourth release with the Woodsist label, was tracked live to tape in various studios and apartments across the Empire State with help from his bandmates in Cut Worms’ touring outfit, Max Clarke, Keven Lareau & Noah Bond. Buoyant melodies are supported by timeless string arrangements, translated from Andrews’ head to page with the help of friend Simon Hanes. The string quartet follows the tradition of Francoise Hardy, Harry Nilsson, Margo Guryan & Belle and Sebastian, giving the whole thing a cinematic ambience with stark shadows of an Edward Hopper painting.

The lyrics tie together narratives of cynical heroes & troubled lovers. In song titles like “Walking Under My Love’s Ladders” and “Checks in the Mail” he delivers clever one liners and wry observations in a comforting voice. “Like a movie star but the movies are closed / Living like a celebrity that nobody knows / Trying hard every day to make ends meet / Somethings you can’t get back, even with your saved receipts” he sings in the Beatles-esque Art Deco pop ballad “Starving Artist”. He knows from experience.

But as the album cover suggests (not John’s own work, but a drawing by artist and friend Christian Peslak), Love For The Underdog also sees Andrews as both the reliable narrator and a character himself: an unlikely omniscient presence, snacking on popcorn at a midnight screening of a slice-of-life movie, surrounded by heroes both unlikely and not.

Love For The Underdog has the feeling of sinking into well-worn red velvet theater seats, when the lights go down and the flickering of projectors run the title: Love for the Underdog, indeed. The glow of New York Movie. By the end, like the comforting smell of buttered popcorn and the whispers of a first date tucked into the back rows, you step out into the bright lights of a city street, the lines of the characters echoing in your head like the advice of an old, wise friend whose comfortable with the passage of time. Just like Andrews sings in 7 minute long mini opera “Fourth Wall”: “Some things take years to know / No one is the same they were years ago”. He looks at the camera and winks.

shame

JANUARY 20 @ 8PM | DOORS 7PM | UPSTAIRS

Modern UK post-punk legends shame are coming to rip the roof off of the Press Room.

“Cutthroat is a joyride. It’s for the inexperienced driver. The one who wants to go fast for no reason other than it’s fun. It’s driven by hunger. Hunger for something better. For something you’ve been told you don’t deserve.

It’s primal. It’s raw. It’s unapologetic. It’s the person who turns up to the party uninvited. ’Cause when you’ve been pushed down, there’s nowhere to go but up. When you ain’t got nothing, you ain’t got nothing to lose.” – shame

Cutthroat is shame at their blistering best. “It’s about the cowards, the cunts, the hypocrites,” says vocalist Charlie Steen. “Let’s face it, there’s a lot of them around right now.”

An unapologetic new album with Grammy winning producer John Congleton at the helm; it’s souped up and supercharged. It’s exactly where you want shame to be.

Still in their twenties, the five childhood friends – Charlie Steen, guitarists Sean Coyle-Smith and Eddie Green, bassist Josh Finerty and drummer Charlie Forbes – have grown shame exponentially, with ambitious sonic ideas and the technical chops to execute them.

Having proved themselves several times over with legendary live shows and three critically-acclaimed albums under their belts, shame went into Cutthroat ready to create a new Ground Zero.

“This is about who we are,” says Steen. “Our live shows aren’t performance art – they’re direct, confrontational and raw. That’s always been the root of us. We live in crazy times. But it’s not about ‘Poor me.’ It’s about ‘Fuck you’.”

Crucial to this incendiary new outlook was producer John Congleton (St. Vincent, Angel Olsen). From their initial meeting, Congleton’s no-bullshit approach became a guiding force to streamline the band’s ideas.

Stamped throughout with shame’s trademark sense of humour, the album takes on the big issues of today and gleefully toys with them. With Trump in the Whitehouse and shame holed up in Salvation Studios in Brighton, they cast a merciless eye on themes of conflict and corruption; hunger and desire; lust, envy and the omnipresent shadow of cowardice.

Musically, too, the record plays with visceral new ideas. Making electronic music on tour for fun, Coyle-Smith had previously seen the loops he was crafting as a separate entity to the things he wrote for shame. Then, he realised, maybe they didn’t have to be. “This time, anything could go if it sounded good and you got it right,” he says.

Cutthroat’s first single and title track takes this idea and runs with it into, quite possibly, the best song shame have ever laid to tape. It’s a ball of barely-contained attitude packed into three minutes of indie dancefloor hedonism. It also masterfully introduces the lyrical outlook of the record: one where cocksure arrogance and deep insecurity are two sides of the same coin.

“I was reading a lot of Oscar Wilde plays where everything was about paradox,” Steen explains. “In ‘Cutthroat’, it’s that whole idea from Lady Windermere’s Fan, ‘Life’s far too important to be taken seriously’.”

‘Spartak’ rolls in on an Americana-flecked country lilt (“I was basically trying to write a Wilco song,” Coyle-Smith chuckles). This song holds one of the main themes of the record, criticising cliques and pack-mentality.

It sets its crosshairs on the social climbers; the people at the party always looking over your shoulder trying to find someone more important.

“I guess this disdain towards cliques comes from how shit I was made to feel by the cool kids growing up.” Says Steen, “ I was a chubby teenager who liked the wrong type of music and wore the wrong type of clothes.”

“It’s just another time I’d like to say fuck you to those people, and to anyone who makes someone feel shitty for not fitting in.” Steen says with a smile on his face.

Album highlight ‘Quiet Life’, the first spark in the Cutthroat writing process, is delivered via a snarling Rockabilly riff, influenced by the tone and attitude of such bands as The Gun Club and The Cramps.

“‘Quiet Life’ is about someone in a shitty relationship. It’s about the judgment they receive and the struggle that they have to go through, trying to understand the conflict they face, of wanting a better life… but being stuck.”

‘Lampião’ goes where shame have never gone before, as Steen sings in Portuguese about the polarising Brazilian bandit – a hero to some, a murderer to others.

“My girlfriend is Brazilian and I was in São Paulo with her parents,” Steen says. “Her mum told me about this famous bandit, Lampião, and his wife, Maria Bonita. They’re like Bonnie and Clyde over there, and just as famous.

“It seemed crazy to me how nobody in London seemed to know who they were, so I wanted to write this sort of folk-song about them, condensing their story. The song that I’m singing in the chorus was actually written by one of the bandits in Lampião’s crew, Volta Seca.”

‘After Party’ underpins Steen’s spitting delivery with unsettling, tremulous synths that then break into a wryly chirpy chorus before closer, ‘Axis of Evil’, sends shame into a whole new thrilling dimension. Channelling the prowling, lusty electronics of Depeche Mode, it’s like nothing the band have done before.

This cheeky self-awareness, too, is important. As much as shame want to burst the bubbles of bluster and ego, encouraging us to look in the mirror and ask ourselves, ‘He who casts the first stone…’, they also understand that, at its heart, life is often ridiculous.

“You never know when you’re gonna go, so make it count while you’re still here,” Steen shrugs. “Every good Catholic kid like myself might have fallen asleep every night with a crucified Jesus on their wall. Maybe that has something to do with it as well…”

The result is an album that revels in the idiosyncrasies of life, raising an eyebrow and asking the ugly questions that so often get tactfully brushed over.

“I’m not here to answer the questions, I’m a 27-year-old idiot…” Steen caveats with a self-effacing chuckle. But the one answer that Cutthroat gives with a resounding flourish is that, right now, shame have never sounded better.
