B Boys

B Boys rip. Listening to their entire new album lands a feeling somewhere between chugging twelve shots of espresso and getting your ass kicked. Luckily, it’s as fun as it is utterly exhilarating. Within the span of two to three minutes, B Boys kick up a storm of raging, art-damaged post-punk, simultaneously tightly wound and wildly chaotic, recalling the finer moments of Wire and early Talking Heads.

Last year, Ezra Furman released an epic, romantic concept album that many are already touting as a timeless masterpiece. Drawing on sounds from all over the pop and rock spectrum, seemingly both past and future, Furman managed to tell an unforgettable story of love on the lam that has cemented his status as a queer sci-fi Bruce Springteen, tapping into untold American heartache and struggle, all the while sweeping us off our feet with songs that demand endless repeat listens.

Guerilla Toss at The Press Room

Guerilla Toss are not of this world. Their songs unfurl and spiral in and out of control like psychedelic transmissions from another planet, all the while conjuring up echoes of indie rock, surf pop, big beat, and classic rock. Guitars and synths catapult and criss-cross, forging untraceable paths for propulsive drums and thick bass to help drive it all home. The result is something that’s as exciting and new as it is inspiringly boundary-pushing.

Here's a band that needs little introduction. Truffle, led by local legend Dave Gerard, has been doing the damn thing for over 30 years now, expertly mixing rock with New Orleans soul, bluegrass, and r&b. Their career has found them sharing stages with the likes of Phish, The Band, Dave Mathews Band, and Little Feat. Yet, somehow, NH is still lucky enough to claim them as our own.

While many know actress Lola Kirke for her work in Gone Girl and Mozart in the Jungle, this multi-talented artist has so much more up her sleeve. Like her phenomenal music. With the bold sass of Loretta Lynn and a smoky, sultry voice that will make every hair on your neck come to full attention, Kirke marries the dusty twang of americana with lush indie rock and dark-hued doo wop for a dangerous and seductive road trip that you’ll be begging to hitch a ride on.

Smooth Hound Smith at The Press Room

Sometimes it takes two to make a thing go right… it takes two to make it out of sight. Smooth Hound Smith is a rare duo that really doesn’t need anyone else in the mix. With soaring harmonies and chemistry that is absolutely off the charts, these two explore the rugged backroads of outlaw folk, raw blues, and southern comfort-kissed indie rock.

Xiu Xiu

Portsmouth, NH 03801 US
+ Google Map
Xiu Xiu

Xiu Xiu is a heroic exercise in the avant-garde, bucking easy genre labels at every turn and creating a next-level atmospheric experience that is hard to shake. If “abstract pop” is their canvas, what they weave into it is a Jackson Pollock painting with splatters of noise, trip hop, electro, and angsty indie rock of the highest order. No one sounds like them, which is the rarest feat imaginable these days. Submerge yourself in their strange and beautiful world and come out of it a little different than you were before.

Philly's answer to The Strokes roll through Portsmouth with a big guitar sound and urgent vocals that rival Wolf Parade and Modest Mouse. There's a reason this band of childhood friends was the talk of indie rock before they even graduated high school. Come hear for yourself.

After a brief sonic and stylistic detour, Titus Andronicus is back and sounding more inspired and ferocious than ever. Between the massive sound of their rousing punk rock anthems and frontman Patrick Stickles's seething sneer, their new songs immediately bring to mind all we love about The Sex Pistols, The Replacements, The Clash, and The Pogues. This one's gonna be a real room-rattler.
