About Sunday Night Jazz
As legendary as The Press Room itself, the Sunday Night Jazz series has been a staple of the Seacoast jazz scene almost forty years. Born out of Press Room founder Jay Smith’s admiration for pianist Tommy Gallant, the weekly series boasted a house rhythm section of Gallant, Jim Howe, and Les Harris Sr. Across hundreds and hundreds of shows, the trio backed a rotating cast of local, regional, and nationally-recognized players.
For the past decade pianist Ryan Parker has carried the torch, bringing the storied tradition to a new generation of players and listeners, and showcasing some of the best jazz in the Seacoast at The Press Room every Sunday night. Current house band, featuring Ryan Parker, bassist Keala Kaumeheiwa, and drummer Les Harris. Jr., lays down the rhythm most evenings.
About Sharon Jones
Sharon Jones is a native of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the 12th of 13 children, and arguably the Seacoast’s favorite performer. Her father was a bandleader before pursuing a career as a master electrician, and he nurtured the family’s passion for music, with five of the Joneses becoming professional musicians. Her mother played classical piano. As a child Jones emulated her older siblings, performing for imaginary audiences in front of mirrors.
After graduating from Portsmouth High School, Jones became a professional singer, traveling all over the country, performing notably with the legendary organist Johnny “Hammond” Smith. After years of touring, she settled in Los Angeles, where she trained at the Gilbert and Sullivan School. Eventually, she returned to Portsmouth where she maintains a busy schedule, delivering performances that include jazz, R&B, and blues.
